Combating climate change is one of the greatest challenges of our time, and carbon pricing is a crucial tool for achieving global emission reduction goals. According to the Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Kristalina Georgieva, the carbon price needs to reach at least $75 per ton by 2030 to ensure that global climate targets are met. This statement was made during COP27, emphasizing the urgency and necessity for effective actions on the global stage.
Currently, carbon pricing varies significantly around the world. While the European Union already surpasses this threshold, taxing about 76 euros per ton, other places like California, in the United States, operate at lower values, and some countries have yet to establish a pricing system. This disparity highlights the complexity and challenges associated with implementing an effective carbon policy that can be accepted and adapted globally.
The IMF proposes the creation of an International Carbon Price Floor (ICPF), which would suggest a minimum price per ton of carbon adjusted according to each country's economic condition: $25 for low-income nations, $50 for middle-income countries, and $75 for high-income countries. This approach seeks equity and minimizes the need for international financial transfers, which historically present political challenges.
Why Do We Need to Act?
The lack of a uniform and predictable global carbon price prevents the development of consistent and long-term corporate strategies for emission reduction. Furthermore, without a clear economic incentive, such as an appropriate carbon price, companies and consumers are less motivated to invest in clean technologies and sustainable practices.
