Brazilian public forests will be granted to generate carbon credits

In an innovative initiative to combat climate change and promote sustainability in the Amazon, two important public conservation areas will be granted to the private sector for restoration and generation of carbon credits. The Bom Futuro National Forest, located in Rondônia, with 17 thousand hectares deforested, and Gleba João Bento, with almost 56 thousand hectares of accumulated deforestation in the states of Rondônia and Amazonas, will be the first to participate in this project.

The concession model is the result of a technical cooperation agreement between ICMBIO and the National Bank for Economic and Social Development (BNDES), signed on the 3rd, at the Ministry of the Environment, in Brasília. The partnership relies on US$800,000 in non-refundable resources provided by the Green Climate Fund, an international initiative to combat climate change.

In addition to federal units, the project will also support concessions in the states. Nelson Barbosa, director of Planning and Project Structuring at BNDES, highlighted that R$30 million will be invested in studies to make concession projects in the Amazon viable. "We will make available to the government and the populations of the areas the results of the studies, necessary investments, expected revenues, job creation and attractiveness for investors", stated Barbosa.

The studies developed concession proposals for state public forests that require recovery of native vegetation, providing financial returns through sustainable environmental management. The SFB's goal is to grant 4 million hectares of federal public forests by 2026 for recovery and sustainable forest management projects, expected to generate 25,000 jobs and R$60 million in annual income for the benefiting municipalities.
